The venom of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum is the best-known poison used in medicine. Many medicines used on humans originated from venom (e.g. the arrow poison curare, used by the Indians in South America).
Botox is commonly used, amongst other things, as an alternative to strabismus surgery, in forms of paralysis, after strokes and also in the cosmetic treatment of wrinkles. In this it works by paralyzing the small skin muscles that cause the wrinkles.
The effect lasts for about six months, after which the treatment should be repeated. The more often Botox is used, the longer its effect lasts.
Since this medication is so expensive, and one vial contains enough for about 50 injections (around 15 to 20 injections are needed per patient), and because it expires within one day after a vial is opened, we “gather” the patients.
The cost for this treatment varies between 300 and 400€.
