Inflammatory gum and periodontal conditions are exclusively infectious diseases caused by bacteria. Three predominant bacterial strains, which can also cause systemic disease, have been identified as the chief culprits. The significance of these germs is made clear by the fact that pregnant women with periodontal infections have a markedly increased risk of premature delivery. They can be successfully treated with antibiotics. This, however, entails the long-term intake of strong medicine. No one wants this because of the numerous side effects alone, for which reason we prescribe broad-spectrum penicillins only in acute cases. There is a far better way to eliminate these germs: by depriving them of their basic nourishment. This consists of invisible films on the teeth, also known as plaque, which we can make visible with ultraviolet light in our clinic. Once the plaque is gone, so are the bacteria - it's as simple as that!
You, as a patient, do most of this yourself. You remove the surface plaque by thoroughly cleaning your teeth - like we showed you - with an electric toothbrush, interdental brushes, dental floss and mouth wash. You will not, however, be able to remove the bacterial films beneath the gum line and within the calculus. Specially trained assistants will do this in our clinic. In our clinic prophylaxis room your teeth will be cleaned from “head to toe” with ultrasound and a kind of “pressure cleaner”, then polished and disinfected (PTC). Agreeable side effects of this medically necessary treatment are brighter teeth and a totally smooth tooth surface on which plaque will be able to take hold only with great difficulty. The enamel remains highly resistant.
The price of this treatment varies between €32 and €82, depending on the number of teeth. If you consider that health insurance will now only cover one calculus removal a year, and that calculus removal is included in the PTC, you will find that the costs are very reasonable.
This treatment is recommended once every quarter. Paying three consecutive quarters in advance will earn you a “loyalty discount” - your fourth quarter cleansing is free.
